Some cloud computing beliefs are not accurate, expert says

Cloud computing solutions are being adopted on a global scale as more companies upgrade their IT infrastructure. However, InforWorld's David Linthicum recently suggested there are several misconceptions regarding the use of cloud  technology.

The writer indicated that some believe their businesses must adopt a cloud infrastructure for all of their systems, but this is not accurate.

"You can move to cloud-based systems, such as storage and compute services, as needed, both intersystem and intrasystem," wrote Linthicum. "Moreover, you can move in a fine-grained manner, shifting only certain system components, such as user interface processing or storage, and leaving the remainder on premises."

Another misunderstanding regarding the use of the cloud is that companies will have to replace their entire enterprise network. Linthicum added that this is only true if their previous system is not effective and must be overhauled.

Cloud computing offers a number of key benefits for organizations using the technology. Cloud-based email archiving solutions offer unlimited storage capacity for all electronic documents, while email continuity systems help protect this information from disruptions, allowing companies to recovery quickly following an incident.
